Narrative Documentary
Award-Winning filmmaker Giovannie Espiritu explores the matriarchal line of her family tree beginning with the origins of Pre-Colonial Tondo where her family was known to be part of the "illustrados" with national hero Jose Rizal, to the loss of their fortune during WW2, and extreme poverty in the Tondo slums where her mother gave birth at sixteen. We touch on Giovannie's past dealing with child abuse, her time in a Biblical doomsday cult as a teen, and her escape from a violent relationship.
This narrative documentary will use a combination of first person interviews, animation, and clown/mime to portray the more abusive parts of Giovannie's life with an eye towards reconciliation and understanding generational trauma, putting an end to the toxic family patterns and curses with her now college-aged son, as well as her own process of de-colonizing her own worldview.
